So, bottom line, I completely agree with you about VE Pro and DP 8.04 with your system.VSL Vienna Ensemble Pro 5.4. This discussion is about CPU speed, not drive speed. I believe that sample streaming while using a lot of RAM is more important than a slight dip in latency. I tried them in both configurations and measured the performance of both. But they do stream a heck of a lot faster. I did not realize that a single 6-core W3680 would deliver that much more performance than two 4-core E5472s.Īlso, using SSDs in a RAID 0 only creates a slight bit of latency. I agree that VE Pro is not needed if your CPUs are fast enough and you have enough RAM and are running 8.04.
Also, I meant 256 buffer (I saw your post). I'm not trying to get in a pissing contest here. If you need 128 then my setup won't work (I tried and it was ugly.) On your large projects, how much real memory is DP taking in the Activity Monitor? Do you have a MacPro? Which year model? So even when I'm pushing DP to the limit, and I have a HUGE template too (all LASS, CineBrass, BWW, CS2, PianoTEQ, Alchemy, reverbs and other demanding plugins, and much much more, etc, etc.), and I use MIR which helps take a load off of DP because it runs as it's own app in it's own memory space, there is still some CPU leftover for other apps. It is possible to push DP 8.04 in 64-bit mode to a point where it starts to run sluggishly, as the OS leaves CPU resources available for other apps. Perhaps you have very few audio tracks in your template? You must have a more recent MacPro, with more recent CPUs. I have a 2008 MacPro with 32GBs of RAM, and my samples and audio are loaded on SSD RAIDs, and the OS.apps are on other SSDs. Not to be skeptical, but I'm talking about DP using over 15GBs of real system memory and running out of CPU overhead. It just begins to slow down at some point. I will admit that if your running HUGE DP sessions, but NOT at the point where DP begins to take up < 12-15GBs of memory, or DP begins to starting clipping its CPU meter, and the buffer is set at 1024 already - if you're not at that level yet, you may not need VE Pro. It allows DP to run at low buffer settings. It takes a load off of DP under heavy VI loads and keeps the VIs stored in RAM while switching projects in DP. Just like regular Instrument tracks, Vracks can be disabled, but that doesn't help you when DP begins to slow down. Vracks just allow you to share VIs across multiple sequences. I've loaded up DP with so many VIs and plugins that it took up a 16GB RAM footprint and began to respond slowly. VE keeps DP from running sluggishly under heavy loads, and allows DP to run at lower buffer settings.Įven with 64-bit DP 8.04 (which is extremely robust), running a huge VI session (vracks or no vracks), will cause DP to begin to respond sluggishly. Neither jbridge nor vracks solves the ultimate problem though. I must try this sometime to see if it any more stable or efficient, I doubt it will be, but I have not tested it. The only thing I can say in DP's defense is that I have yet to try running VIs in V Racks mode due to the fact that I only run one chunk at a time. If I run VIs in DP, I crash way too much. So, you lose that efficiency aspect when auditioning tim-e based loops etc.īut even in this case, VE still smokes DP as far as VI stability.
You set the buffers in Vienna ABOVE ZERO to save computer resources. It is 1000% more stable than DP for VIs.There is ONE big bug that sucks though and I cannot get Vienna to respond to it, otherwise it is a beautiful product. The bug is that if you have time-based aspects to a VI, such as Superior Drummer's drum beat auditioning, and you have Vienna's buffers set to anything above ZERO, the loop will audition out of time.įortunately, once to drag the MIDI of the loop into DP, it will then play back IN time.
